About Us

It is Anne Hamilton's joy and privilege to help writers, directors, and performers create new scripts and theatrical experiences. She also helps screenwriters to develop the stories of their dreams. 

Anne is the Founder of Hamilton Dramaturgy, a dramaturgy practice now located in Bucks County, PA. She has nineteen years of experience in the professional theatre in New York City, across the country, and internationally. The majority of her clients are located in New York and Los Angeles, and she welcomes clients from any corner of the world. Her clients have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the MacArthur “Genius” Award, the Tony ® Award, and a Royal Court International Residency. Last year, STAGE DIRECTIONS magazine named her a “trailblazer” in American dramaturgy.

Kathleen Chalfant starred in her one-woman play AND THEN I WENT INSIDE at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City on November 9, 2009. The expanded version of the play THE STACY PLAY - A LOVE SONG - VOLUME I is now showing in TRANSITIONS, a juried international Virtual Event at http://www.penandbrush.org/.

She produces ScriptForward!, a specialty E-newsletter for professional scriptwriters, every month. It always includes helpful articles for arts collaborators.

Her popular podcast TheatreNow! features interviews with some of the most exciting female theatre artists working in America today. Guests have included: Quiara Alegria Hudes, Ruth Margraff, Claire Lautier, Kristin Marting, Valentina Fratti, Catherine Filloux, Yvette Heyliger and Yvonne Farrow. Hamilton has consulted with Andrei Serban, the Joseph Papp Public Theater, the Harold Prince Musical Theatre Institute, Michael Mayer, Lynn Nottage, Yehuda (Judd) Ne'eman, Classic Stage Company, B.T. McNicholl,Tina Andrews, NYSCA, Jean Cocteau Repertory Theater, Leslie Lee, Andrew Barrett, The New York City Public Library's Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop.

She worked for James Lipton (host and producer, INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO) for three years as the academic advisor to the graduate students and faculty at the Actors Studio Drama School
The Bogliasco Foundation of New York City and Bogliasco, Italy awarded her a fellowship in recognition of her personal contribution to the American theatre. She studied the philosophy of aesthetics at St. Catherine's College, Oxford University, and British literature and history at St. Clare's Hall, Oxford. She was a NYSCA auditor for several years. Hamilton holds a master of fine arts degree from Columbia University School of the Arts and is a dual citizen of the United States and Italy.

Hamilton has published several articles in a series of Case Studies designed to help playwrights and directors understand exactly how a dramaturg can assist them in different projects such as staged readings, new play development, world premieres, etc. She has published four in Scriptforward! and Gary Garrison's E-magazine THE LOOP has reprinted two of them, as well as several other articles on playwrighting. She also has published several articles about how to make the transition from college or graduate school to the professional world. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild, Inc.
 
She has column entitled "Page and Stage" in the BUCKS COUNTY WOMEN'S JOURNAL. She writes on plays and playwrighting for this educational newspaper. Recent profiles include Quiara Alegria Hudes, Kate Fodor, Sheilah Rae, and Susan Atkinson.
